The stock portion of the investment is based on an algorithm which is very fragile. I lost lots of money consistently both when the market was going up and down. After contacting them, they referred to the last year performance and simply blamed the market rather than considering the possibility of their algorithm being exploited by countless learning algorithms out there. — Update: After about 3 months that they kept sending emails to hold on to your asset even if you are losing, I finally decided to stop the bleeding. I was down 1k with only 10% stock option. So my recommendation is to stay as far as you can from this app.

I think Betterment is hands-down the best investing service available to a new investor today. They make portfolio management supremely easy and, thanks to partial shares, a $100 portfolio will have the same performance as a $100,000 portfolio. I really appreciate the transparency Betterment has when it comes to assessing their fees and taxable sharing. Modern portfolio theory really works - an investor who had put $100,000 in Betterments 50/50 portfolio right before the recession in 2008 would have a little over $182,000 today. And thats having paid very little in taxes for rebalances. The market has been pretty volatile recently, so ignore anyone that says Betterment will cause you to lose money. They might in the short term! But their super-diversified portfolio will give you great returns in the long run, regardless of market dips. Betterment also has the best customer service in the business. Every time Ive written them, theyve given me a clear, friendly response within three hours. My girlfriend rolled over an inherited IRA to them as well and was very impressed by their friendly customer service and how quickly they attended to her needs. I am so glad I discovered Betterment. I now invest exclusively with them and and see the benefits every day in my portfolio. 10/10 - recommend to my friends every day.
